Why does my rubber plant have long bare stems and pale new leaves?

On a rubber plant this shows as a long bare stem with a tuft of leaves at the top, wide gaps between the leaves on new growth, and new leaves that are smaller and paler than the ones below. The plant leans towards the window.

The most likely cause is not enough light, which the entry says also leaves the lower stem bare. A rubber plant needs bright indirect light, near a window and out of the harshest sun. Leaves lower down are dropped because the plant cannot pay for leaves it cannot light.

To confirm it in a minute, measure the gap between two leaves on the newest growth and compare it with an older gap. If the new gaps are longer, it is stretching. Look at the distance from the window, and which way the stem leans. The body of the entry describes the same shape as a single bare pole with a tuft on top.

Two other causes are worth ruling out. A rubber plant that has never been pruned grows tall and narrow whatever the light, because the Missouri Botanical Garden says pruning the main branches makes a bushier plant and leaving it unpruned yields a tall, narrow, tree-like shape. And winter shortens the day: stretching that began in autumn on a plant that was compact in summer, in a spot that has not changed.

Stretched growth does not shorten, so you judge the recovery by the next few leaves, which should be closer together and larger after a move to brighter light. Leaves already made stay where they are. Allow a growing season before you judge the change, and remember that bare stem below a good crown stays bare until the plant is cut back.

The fix

Move it brighter, and in spring cut the top out above a leaf node so side shoots break lower down.
