Why does my rubber plant have variegated leaves turning plain green?
On a variegated rubber plant the cream or pink edge of the new leaves narrows and turns green, or the new leaves arrive almost plain green, while the older leaves keep the pattern they were made with. A plain dark-leaved form has nothing to lose, so this page is about the variegated kinds.
The most likely cause is that the plant is too far from the light. The entry says variegated forms need real light to keep their cream edge, and the Royal Horticultural Society says variegated figs need more light than green-leaved ones. A variegated plant in a dark corner reverts to plain green and the pattern does not come back on the leaves already made.
To confirm it in a minute, compare a new leaf with one made a year ago, and look at where the plant stands at midday. If it is more than a metre or two from a bright window, or in a room that has become shadier, that is the cause. Light is the first thing to change for a plant like this.
Two other causes are worth ruling out. A single stem that is wholly green and growing faster than the rest has reverted, which more light does not fix, and the RHS warns that plain green shoots on variegated plants can quickly take over. And feeding: heavy feeding pushes new growth towards green, and the entry asks for half strength monthly in the growing season.
Old leaves cannot change, so judge the recovery by the new ones. After a move to brighter light, the next leaves should carry more of the cream and pink edge. In the growing season that takes a few weeks per leaf. In winter the plant is slow, and the improvement shows in spring.

The fix
Move it nearer the window. Plain green shoots on a variegated plant should be cut out or they take over.
