Radishes are the crop for the impatient and for children: sown on a Saturday and eaten within a month, in a pot no deeper than a shoebox. Their two rules are speed and water. Anything that slows them, dry soil, crowding, poor light, gives a woody root with a fierce taste, and the fix is always the same, which is to sow thinly and never let the pot dry. Sow a very short row every fortnight rather than a long one, because they all come at once and go over quickly. They make a useful marker crop between slow ones, up and gone before the parsnips beside them need the room. Winter radishes, the long white mooli types, are sown late and grown slowly.
