How the filters are worked out

Light, setting, difficulty and the room tags are written into each entry by hand. Two of the filters are worked out rather than written: how thirsty a plant is comes from its growing season interval, so thirsty means every five days or less, average means six to ten, and sparing means eleven days or more; and size comes from the height an entry records, so compact is up to 40cm, medium is up to 120cm, and large is anything above that. A plant whose height nobody has measured yet is left out of a size filter rather than guessed at.

Pet safety is the strictest filter here. Asking for plants safe around cats returns only the ones whose entry says safe, never the ones marked unknown. There are more plants in the world that are probably fine than there are plants we have checked, and an animal that eats a houseplant deserves the cautious answer rather than the generous one.

Where these answers come from

Every result links to its entry, and the entry says where its figures came from, when it was last checked and what usually goes wrong with that plant. The finder narrows the journal down; it does not replace reading about the plant you are about to buy.

The address bar carries your filters, so a search you like can be sent to somebody else or kept as a bookmark. Nothing about the search is stored or sent anywhere.
